Out and about - Within 15 minutes
Within a very short distance there are many attractions and places of interest. Here are just a few to whet your appetite.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bolsover - A very attractive market town, with its historic castle (English Heritage) and a good basic range of shops.

A small market town situated high on the edge of a limestone escarpment it commands fine views over the Doe Lea Valley directly below, and across the Pennines as far away as West Yorkshire. Its richly preserved heritage dates back to 1086 when it was first referred to in the Domesday Book.

The parish church of St Mary and St Lawrence dating back to Norman times has a 13th century Broche spire, one of only two surviving examples in the UK today. Take time to wander along the Bolsover Town Trail, which notes both the historic and industrial heritage of the town. The town features a selection of hostelries where fine ale and wholesome food are available.

Bolsover Castle - Is situated high on a wooded hillside dominating the vale below. With its vaulted chambers, frescoed walls and battlement towers, it is perhaps the most romantic renaissance medieval fairytale house in the country.

The present castle was built on the site of an original 12th century Norman castle. What we see today is in fact an early 17th century mansion, a feature of which is an impressive indoor riding school, still in use, it was originally as important a centre of equestrianism as the Spanish Riding School in Vienna is today. The year 2000 saw the opening of a new visitor information centre, facilities include; a discovery room with a model of the castle, gift shop, coffee shop and toilets. A visit to the castle would not be complete if you do not use the new audio tour to guide you around. There is a full events programme, including battle re-enactments taking place throughout the year. (01246 822844)

Chesterfield - A historic market town, with its world famous Crooked Spire, an excellent range of shops (M & S, BHS etc) and three supermarkets.

This friendly market town lying on the eastern edge of the Derbyshire Peak District has a most unusual and unique landmark, the "Crooked Spire" church. The Church of St Mary and All Saints spire began its life straight and history is silent about when it began to lean. A visit to Chesterfield is a must if you are to discover the legends that surround it- and the elusive truth! The town is also famed for having one of the largest open air markets in England, with upto 200 stalls packing the market place every Monday, Friday and Saturday. Should you be looking for a bargain antique, visit on Thursday when there is a "flea market".

Revolution House - The Revolution House, in the Derbyshire village of Old Whittington, three miles north of Chesterfield, takes its name from the Revolution of 1688.

Three hundred years ago, this cottage was an alehouse, the 'Cock and Pynot' ('Pynot' is a dialect word for magpie), and it was here, as history and tradition relate, that three local noblemen- the Earl of Devonshire (from nearby Chatsworth), the Earl of Danby and Mr. John D'Arcy - met to begin planning their part in events which led to the overthrow of King James II in favour of William and Mary of Orange.

Stainsby Mill - This fully restored and working water mill is one of Derbyshire's' best kept secrets, nestling in a small valley close to Hardwick Hall, it originally dates from the 13th century. The present mill is predominantly 18th century and was built to supply the Hardwick estate with flour until falling into disrepair at the beginning of the 20th century. The National Trust restored the mill to full working order opening its doors again to the public in 1991.

All of the authentic grinding and lifting machinery is powered by a massive 17ft high water wheel, taking water from the adjacent mill pond, the aroma of freshly ground wheat and oats enables the visitor to picture the scene of the miller at work all those years ago.
