Clumber Park - WORKSOP
- A National Trust property, Clumber Park is open daily
all year. This wide expanse of parkland, farmland and
woods covers over 3800 acres (1500 hectares) was once
the seat of the Dukes of Newcastle.
There are over 120 different types of tree at this
wonderful National Trust property, offering year-round
colour and including the memorable avenue of limes, 2
miles (3km) long, which forms the main approach.
Although the mansion was demolished in 1938, many estate
features survive, including the Victorian chapel, a
Gothic Revival ‘mini-cathedral’, stable yard and garages
and ornate entrance lodges. Particularly fascinating are
the superb 19th-century glasshouses, which incorporate a
palm house, vineries and working apiary, and overlook
the walled kitchen garden. An avenue of cedars leads to
the pleasure grounds.

Creswell Crags - Home of the Ice Age Hunter
- Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge honeycombed with
caves and smaller fissures. Stone tools and remains of
animals found in the caves by archaeologists provide
evidence for a fascinating story of life during the last
Ice Age between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago. Creswell
Crags was among the most northerly places on earth to
have been visited by our ancient ancestors, a story that
is unique on a European and World scale. All of the
caves are protected by metal grills to preserve the rare
archaeological deposits that remain inside. At the east
end of the gorge is the Museum and Education Centre. The
gorge is part of the Creswell Heritage Landscape Area.

Haddon Hall
- If we were to take ourselves back to 1170, we would
see very little of the present-day Haddon Hall, other
than parts of the Eagle Tower and chapel. A building
originally stood on the land it now occupies as far back
as 1087, but it was not until 1370 that Richard de
Vernon embarked on a project of major construction.
