You could easily spend a week in Rowthorne Village without ever using your car. The barn is only fifteen minutes gentle walk from the 500 acres of the historic Hardwick Estate (The Estate grounds are open all year - The Hall is open at selected times) with its ancient woodland, wildlife, rich fishing lakes and miles of wonderful walks. Visitors can also enjoy the walled courtyards that enclose the herbaceous borders, the orchard and the herb garden.

The magnificent Hall, which is a National Trust property, is open at selected times throughout the year. Please check the web site for full details.

The Hardwick Estate is home to Stainsby Mill, a fully functioning water powered mill with a 17 foot waterwheel. The mill has many working days when you can see the mill in action and even buy some of the freshly milled flour to make your own bread.

The hall was the last and greatest building project of Bess, Countess of Shrewsbury almost 400 years ago.

Throughout the year many events and activities are organised by The National Trust at Hardwick Hall, starting in early March and running right up to Christmas. (Further details from the N. T. on 01246 850430). The new hall sits to the side of Hardwick Old Hall which is managed by English Heritage.– now a magnificent shell of a building towering over the local landscape.

There is even a 1940’s vintage coach that travels in high season between Bolsover, Rowthorne, Hardwick and Chesterfield, running directly past (and stopping at if you want!) Pear Tree Farm Barn.

(Due to mechanical problems this vehicle is presently unavailable)

If you enjoy walking, or cycling the miles of trails and paths around the Estate are a delight at any time of the year. If you have a cycle bring it with you – or you can hire one (advance booking required) from the barn’s owner who lives next door.

When you are feeling hungry there is plenty of choice - and all within walking distance. There are many more places to eat nearby - and in the barn we have a list with selected menus.

Pear Tree Farm Barn Self Catering Accommodation (image: Hardwick Inn, not to be missed excellent ales and meals ofall descriptions)

Hardwick Inn (Tel: 01246 850245)- Just down the hill from Hardwick Hall, about 45 minutes 'good but quite strenuous' walk from Pear Tree Farm Barn. The Inn offers an extensive range of meals, from light bites to full meals. There is an excellent range of beers and other refreshments to suit all tastes. Highly Recommended. (You will find a menu in the barn) Huge garden where you can eat out on summer evenings.

Our Local Pub - 'The Young Vanish' is named after a race horse
The Young Vanish - A leisurely 15 minutes walk from the barn towards Glapwell. This pub has recently been converted into a carvery. Choice is quite limited but the food is good, hot and plentiful and the value is excellent. It is the ideal last minute choice if you are feeling a bit lazy and dont want to cook!

Ma Hubbards - Its quite a walk across the fields to Doe Lea (and a bit of a pull back up the hill!) but Ma Hubbards provides 'value food' for that quick snack or for something different.
